Maruti Suzuki is one of the largest car manufacturing companies in India. It has a large market in the low-entry car market. It has tried multiple times to enter into premium markets but unfortunately it failed. Though previous Baleno and SX4 are good cars, they could not hit the right cord on what the Indian public want. As the demand for premium markets is increasing, it is necessary for Maruti to have good models for being No 1.
Okay. Enough of introduction. Maruti has launched Baleno and they got it right! Be its European derived looks or the practicality it offers, Maruti have given their very best! I know you might have seen the reviews and did a little research onto what the car is if you are here. So I wont give you all the details of whats the fuel efficiency or boot size or back seat space or what the engines are. If you want to know I will leave the cars specifications below. I will talk only on which variant to buy.
Maruti sells Baleno under their Nexa premium dealerships. That means you wont get the typical variant badging (Lxi, Vxi, Ldi, Vdi, etc.) Whenever Maruti releases any model under Nexa, they get new variant badging, Sigma, Delta, Zeta and Alpha. Sigma being the base or entry variant and Alpha being the high end variant. I wont talk on every features here but I focus on the most essential things which you get and not get for each variant. And in the last I will give my argument on which one is best for the buck.

Safety
Safety is the most important aspect to discuss as nothing is more valuable then life. But unfortunately this is given less importance in our market. Anyway I am really happy that Maruti has been giving tremendous importance to safety in recent times! For all the variants ABS (Anti-lock braking), EBD (Electronic brake-force Distribution) and Dual Airbags are standard! This is a very good focus on safety and all the other brands should opt it.
Sigma (Petrol: 5.11 Lakh, Diesel: 6.21 Lakh)*
Most of the manufacturers release a base variant for showing of the cost. I mean they release it for the purpose of showing the starting price to the public. Eg: You might have read " Maruti launched new Baleno, starting from 5.11 Lakh". Only for that. Hey thats my feeling :). Because the base variant actually don't get much! Not even power windows for passenger seats. Thats ridiculous when you are talking of a premium hatchback and putting more then 5 lakh for it! Ok. Now lets talk about the features we get for this variant.
- As I told you before ABS, EBD and Dual Airbags are standard.
Sigma variant: Dash |
Sigma Variant: Dual Airbags |
Delta (Petrol: 5.76 Lakh, Diesel: 6.86 Lakh)*
Delta variant is the second in line and gets most of the essential stuff which are used regularly.
Delta variant: Dash |
Features we get for this variant.
- Central locking and speed sensing door lock is provided.
- Power windows for all the doors.
- A music system is added to this variant with four speakers. It has many features like bluetooth, Aux, USB, Streering mounted controls, AM/FM radio.
Delta variant: Steering mounted controls and bluetooth, telephony |
- It also gets Automatic Climate control.
Delta variant: Automatic climate control and 2 Din music system |
- Rare parking sensors are included. This is one of the important features when you are trying to reverse it. Its a nice useful feature for safety.
- Multi Information display is given which gives you a variety of information like temperature, avg fuel economy, digital time, etc
- USB and power sockets for charging your phone. Maruti didn't forget back seat passengers. They too get a charging port!
- And also wheel caps for the tyres are included.
Zeta (Petrol: 6.36 Lakh, Diesel: 7.46 Lakh)*
Zeta is the third variant in the lineup. The highlight features which you get in this variant is the keyless start Button and a Digital information display.
Zeta variant |
Features which Zeta gets
- All the features of Delta are included.
- Smart keyless access is one good feature. It helps you to get in and out or start the car without removing your key from the pocket.
Zeta variant: Start/Stop Button |
- A nice TFT display is included for information display. This display contains nice animations for indicating open doors, RPM reading. It also gives information like avg fuel consumption, avg speed instantaneous consumption.
Zeta variant: Nice colour TFT display. |
- Alloy Wheels with nicely designed wheel caps and fog lamps.
- Driver side arm rest.
- Little more chrome on door handles and back windshield.
Alpha (Petrol: 7.06 Lakh, Diesel: 8.16 Lakh)*
Alpha variant is the top of the line variant. It gets all the bells and whistles which are offered by Maruti. The main highlights for this variant is projector headlamps and touchscreen display.
Alpha variant: Projector headlamps and DRLs |
Features which we get for Alpha variant
- All the features of Zeta variant.
- This is the only variant which gets the smart looking projector lamps and DRLs (Day light running lamps).
- A touch screen infotainment Display. It includes reverse camera, GPS navigation, voice command. This is the only infotainment display which doubles up as Apple's car play system. This means if you have an iPhone, when you connect it, the display converts to Apple's car play system. Using this we can use Apple's apps like maps, music, send messages, etc.
Alpha variant: Touch screen infotainment display |
Alpha variant: Apple's car play system when iPhone is connected |
Delta Automatic (Petrol: 6.81 Lakh)*
There is also an automatic variant available. Unfortunately it is available under one variant. I guess Maruti has done this to reduce the over price range. It gets all the features of the Delta variant + an auto gear box.
Delta Automatic variant: Auto gear box |
Which variant to take?
Personally I would never recommend anyone to take the base (Sigma) variant since it doesnt get any of the premium features which anyone expects from such a segment. Delta variant gets all the basic features right. Automatic climate control, power windows, music systems, power outlets, steering mounted controls. This is the best value for money variant you can get. Though you spend nearly ₹65,000, you get a lot of the missing features. All the features which are offered in Zeta like keyless entry, start/stop button, TFT instrument clusters or Alpha's projector lamps and touch screen display are luxury. I am not against opting them and its fine to select them if you have the money. But you need to spend a lot for getting those features. For example you will have to spend nearly ₹70,000 for getting projector lamps and touch screen info system and for the other extra luxury, you will have to spend a whooping ₹1,40,000 over the Delta variant. I could spend this all money in fuel to run the car and you get 1,40,000/65 = 2154 lts (I took petrol cost as ₹65) of petrol. Lets take 10 kmpl for the car in city and you get nearly 21,540 kms of driving. You see, it is significant amount of driving and if a person don't use a car too much, I strongly think they should opt the Delta variant.
:) :) This is my opinion and I really apologies if I don't agree with your opinion. But I would still want to know your opinion on this and your side of the argument. Please leave a comment below on what you think.
Till then,
Sreewathsa.

DeleteI am planning to buy Baleno and in confusion about which Variant -- SIGMA or Delta.
ReplyDeleteCan u let me know... if I buy the Sigma -- how much it would cost me.. to get a Good CD / USB etc. Player ... and Rear Parking Sensor.... also, Rear Power Window??? if u buy these outside ...?
A good Sony music player would cost about ₹ 5000/- to ₹ 6000/-. Again there are so many options. If you want a touch screen it would cost nearly 16000/-. Rear parking sensors would cost nearly ₹4000/-. And about power windows I am not sure but what I find from a bit of online research is it would cost about ₹6000/- to ₹7500/-. These are all rough estimates. But the real cost should not be much far from these. I guess it would be good if you go to any nearby local store and check it out.
DeleteAbout the Delta variant, as I told, you get all these already fitted along with climate control, power outlet for charging and steering mounted controls. I know these are all not necessary options but its good to have these when its a premium hatch.
U r informations are informative. Thanks
DeleteI am planning to buy Baleno and had thought of Zeta variant but Delta also looks fine. What is the cost of alloy wheels for Baleno?
ReplyDeleteAlloys for Baleno would cost around ₹20K to ₹25k. You could sometimes get cheaper than that based on the area and store and the wheel size. Please check the warranty as you may loose the warranty if you change the size of the wheel (I guess).
DeleteIf thats the only one you want to save a little then you could buy a Delta and upgrade the wheels. But if your wallet could reach till Zeta, then you would get a little more options for the extra money you pay like start-stop, colour Info display, etc.
Note: The cost is for all the four wheels.!
DeleteAm in Agreement Sreewathsa and adding on his views Delta has all the Value added features. Though having said this Zeta comes with added advantage which are useful like seat height adjustment,Tilt Steering , Alloy Wheels , Keyless Entry. MID TUT, Which you cannot add in Delta Variant. So if you want to keep Car for next 7years or more then go for Zeta.
DeleteI am planning to buy Baleno and had thought of Zeta variant but Delta also looks fine. What is the cost of alloy wheels for Baleno?
ReplyDeleteI am planning to a buy a baleno shortly. I heard that kerb weight of baleno is very low when compared to Swift or i20. Is there any relation between kerb weight and structural integrity of of the car. From the safety point of view which is better i20 or baleno
ReplyDeleteI guess the structural strength is a concern. I have been reading them too regarding Baleno. But until the crash test reports are out we cannot tell correctly. But answering your questions, the materials with which the body is made also matters. In the high end cars they use aluminium or carbon fibre which is both light and tough. Maruti is using hard steel. Also Maruti cars always perform bad in crash tests.
DeleteAbout i20, it scored 4 stars in NCAP crash test. So I would suggest you to take i20 with airbags. That would be the best option for safety.

ReplyDeleteNcap crash test of baleno came out recently. It scored 3 star/4 star rating. Is it applies to indian made baleno also. Is there any difference in quality of Indian made baleno and exported bsleno
ReplyDeleteI don't think there would be any difference in the chassis and materials as it is being manufactured only in India and also it is a premium car in India too. But the safety equipment should be much lesser than the European versions. There have more than 2 airbags and various electronic equipment. My guess is the Indian version should perform little (no much difference though) poorly due to the lack of safety equipment, not because of the chassis or the car construction.

ReplyDeleteI am planning to buy zeta model but if i want the apple carplay music system(which is there in higher model) in this model.how much the music system will cost?
ReplyDeleteIf you want to buy a third party music system which has apple car play, it would cost about Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000. Pioneer has launched few music system models, you can check them. Here is the link

I am planning to buy zeta model but if i want the apple carplay music system(which is there in higher model) in this model.how much the music system will cost?
ReplyDeleteI am planning to buy baleno sigma since my budget is not very high, safety is a priority for me,the only reason i am preferring baleno is because of the safety features, 3 star safety rating, abs, ebd, airbags.
ReplyDeleteI also thought about Swift but it scored 0 star safety rating. However i was also confused about my other options ie wagonr, ritz, tiago. So can you please tell me the safety rating of wagonr, Ritz, tiago?.I could opt for buying them as they are cheaper. Also, there are rumours that the production of Ritz has been stopped, if so should I buy it or not,and about wagonr since it has less width compared to its height, does it have a good high speed stability?.And about tiago,my doubt was about tata's post sales service and their ownership experience. Please guide me regarding these options and doubts and please suggest me which car to buy.So please do reply and pardon me for the no.of questions.
Hi, About the crash tests related to WagonR and Tiago I don't think there is any valid crash test reports. So I really cannot comment on them. But since Swift scored 0 stars, I don't think WagonR scores any higher. I dont recommend Ritz as its not currently in production as the value of the car comes down drastically if its not in current production. WagonR is tall so if would roll around corners for sure and good be little wobbly. On straight roads it should do fine. If you are driving in ghats then don't drive it too fast or aggressive.
DeleteI would suggest go to some base model of Baleno (as we know the current safety score for sure) if you are very particular on safety which you should be. :)
Hi - I liked your review and found it useful. I am considering buying the Baleno - Delta or Zeta. I have a few questions, which you can help me with possibly.
ReplyDelete1. Safety - Heard that the Indian Version of Baleno has scored 2/5 in NCAP crash test. Is this ok, compared to other cars in the same segment in India? Is it due to the ligher weight of the Baleno? I have a Swift now, so I guess this is an upgrade? :)
2. What is UV cut glass in the Zeta trim? does it cut out the heat significatly like some of the stickers available in 3M shops? I have got it on my current Swift - which is good.
3. How is the MID different on the Delta and the Zeta versions? In delta, it says "Multi instrument display" - and in Zeta, its "Electronic Display - colour TFT " ... how are these different from each other?
4. IF I buy the Delta, can I put these accessories (third party) in the car? Can you help with approx cost? a) Lights for boot? b) Light & Heat reductions on glass? c) Black Alloy wheels d) 3M stickers for windows (approx 15k i think) e) chrome handles.
5) Is the Driver Seat
Honestly, I understand that the Delta trim is the best value for money, however, I am inclined to spend the extra 70,000 and get the Zeta for the additional features (espicially the colour TFT, UV Cut glass, lights, driver seat movement). Still confused. I dont want to overpay for it, if it can be done outside much cheaper.
TIA for your help.
Q 5: Is the driver adjustable feature useful for tall drivers or short drivers?
ReplyDelete1) The safety rating for Baleno is actually less. We cannot correctly comment on why but lighter weight could be an important criteria. If you looking in this segment, the other competition offer better safety on the higher models. Since you are not so much tight on the budget, have a look at them. Based on the EuroNCAP Baleno offers the lowest safety. Of course you should take EuroNCAP as just indication only and don't rely on it fully.
Delete2) I heard that they have UV cut glass for windshield and side windows but I have little knowledge on how they are.
3) The Electronic Display - colour TFT one on Zeta variant have more info and have good animations showing real-time RPM, shows which doors are open and such stuff and also a colour display. Its nice to have that, but nothing you would miss out if you don't have it.
4) If you wanted to put these accessories, I think it would be good to buy a Zeta variant as you would get all these and more for just 70K. You get the start-stop feature, Colour TFT and all these accessories.
5) Its mostly used for short drivers to adjust the height of the seat to see the road better.
Hope I helped you. :)
Thanks a lot. I have booked the Delta trim now. Figured the colour TFT is not much more, and the UV cut glass mainly cuts out the UV and not the heat (which is mainly IR). Hence decided to get the Delta trim CVT - and ut in my prefered accessories - 3M stickers on glass for heat reduction (about 15k), and may get the alloys as well - 24k. Thanks for your info. BTW, I also realised that the safetly rating is pretty decent at 3 stars in 2016 is better than the swift 5 stars in 2010. :)
Deleteconfused between sigma and delta help me i want to add touch music system with rear camera and wheel cover can you please give me approx cost
ReplyDeleteI think it should cost you around ₹30,000, for installing a touch screen with rear camera and wheel covers..! I could actually cost much less based on the model or company you select.
DeleteConfused with delta and zeta can I add UV cut glass to delta and chrome on windows as zeta.
ReplyDeleteyeah you could add them separately...If those are the only once you need, you might go for Delta and fit them separately..
DeleteI'M CONFUSED BETWEEN SIGMA AND DELTA CAN YOU TELL ME IS IT WORTH SPENDING 80K MORE FOR DELTA? HOW MUCH ITS GONNA COST ME TO MAKE IT(SIGMA) EXACTLY LIKE DELTA?
ReplyDeleteI MEAN EVERYTHING LIKE DELTA LIKE REAR WIPER WITH WASHER, GOOD AUDIO SYSTEM WITH FM, WHEEL CAPS, AUTOMATIC TEMPERATURE CONTROL, ETC
ReplyDeleteIt may not cost so much as 80K. May be you can save nearly 20k - 25k if you fit these stuff from 3rd party. But you have to do some research on which is good and also get a good bargain.
DeleteThanks dude this nearly sort our my whole confusion!!!
Deletebooked today sigma after reading your comment i did some research in market...As I stay in Delhi Karol bagh market guys even can manage top model LED light for 8000!!!

You did not mention the 16 inch alloy wheels. Only Zeta and Alpha have 16 inch wheels. This makes the car stand out from others . Certainly because of this Zeta scores over Delta if you can stretch your budget. Instead of Alpha go for Zeta AT. You won’t regret it.
